Craig Williams and Amy Hind pleaded guilty to cheating in the Gambling Commission's election betting investigation on Monday. The two placed wagers on the May 2024 general election date using confidential information before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's announcement.Williams, former parliamentary private secretary to Sunak and MP for Montgomeryshire from December 2019 to May 2024, admitted to violating section 42(1)(a) of the Gambling Act 2005. He placed a £100 wager on a July election date through the Ladbrokes application. The operator flagged the transaction because Williams was registered as a politically exposed person, a status that requires enhanced due diligence and potential account restrictions before gambling is permitted.
Amy Hind, employed as a business support manager at the NHS during the relevant period, entered the same plea. The Gambling Commission reported that Hind accessed confidential information regarding the election timing, which was relayed to her by her husband, Anthony Hind. Anthony Hind serves as deputy digital director for the Conservative Party and faces separate charges.
The regulator noted that Williams attended meetings with the prime minister and senior Conservative headquarters staff where the election date was discussed, and used this privileged knowledge for personal gain.
Both defendants face a potential fine or imprisonment of up to two years, with sentencing scheduled at Southwark Crown Court at a later date. The remaining twelve individuals charged in the initial probe are scheduled for trial in September 2027 and January 2028. The group includes Simon Chatfield, Russell George, Anthony Hind, Jeremy Hunt, Thomas James, Charlotte Lang, Anthony Lee, Iain Makepeace, Nick Mason, Paul Place, James Ward, Jacob Willmer, and Nicole Macedo.
